"One of the things I love the most about living in the Pacific North West is that our environment is constantly changing. It forces us to be adaptable, and to embrace the energy around us that is constantly shifting. In Tofino, we experience all four seasons most days, as fronts build, release, and dissipate. The elements sway with the energy, and get transformed with each new moment. This change strengthens us, and in the summer months, allows us to really cherish the times of warmth and peace. Through the winder, the cold and rain grounds our souls as we focus on survival in hostile confitions. The flux is the thing I miss the most when travelling to tropical shores, and it's what always pulls me back home. Like the seasons our beings evolve throuhg cycles, not a linear path like our mind have us believe. I was going through a really difficult time of change during the paintingof this canvas, and I wanted it to symbolize the letting go of all the layers of trauma and masks humanity is trapped behind. As the trees shake off the past, so can we, moving forward and soaring high through all life's struggles. "Release" was created for a close family friend who wanted a bug's eye view of the canopy. Through this perspective we're able to transcend out illusionary selves and return to a place of aw, wonder and mystery. It's based off a grove of Broad Leaf Maples next to Great Central Lake, near Port Alberni. These trees are protected from logging and are being sustainably tapped for maple syrup production by the Hupacasaph First Nations."

About the Maker

Creatures of the Sun

Andrew Talbot (Tali) grew up exploring and painting the far corners of the island from an early age. Inspired by years of surf trips, hikes and kayaking along the West Coast, his canvases offer a glimpse into the sacred places that connect us with nature and our inner beings. Each painting starts with an image and a vision and ends telling a story and capturing a feeling. A product of the thriving environment and culture that is Vancouver Island. Tali is based near Ucluelet, B.C. for the warmer months, where he lives off-grid in his converted short bus Bodhi. He spends his Winters splitboarding in the Kootenays and traveling to warmer waters.
